The Louisville Orchestra kicks off its new season Friday, September 3, 8:30 p.m., at Whitney Hall with guest artist Sarah Chang, who will play Felix Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto as part of the program. Chang began her career as an eight-year-old prodigy and has gone on to play with the world's major orchestras, winning rave reviews and becoming a successful EMI recording artist.
The 2010-2011 Louisville Orchestra season will pay tribute to some of the great music capitals of the world as it celebrates its own unique place in the history of classical music – a story told in the documentary, “Music Makes a City.”
For the opening concert, the first stop is Leipzig, Germany, where Mendelssohn debuted his concerto for violin in 1845. Conducted by Maestro Jorge Mester, the evening's program will also include music by Richard Wagner and Giacomo Puccini, as well as works by Manuel de Falla and Paul Dukas.
Sarah Chang was born in Philadelphia to Korean parents, studied at Julliard, and has been honored for her professional achievements with the Avery Fisher Prize, a place in the Hollywood Bowl's Hall of Fame, and has had a chair named for her at Yale University's Sprague Hall.
