Program:
Brahms- Tragic Overture
Brahms - Variations on a Theme of Joseph Haydn
Mahler - Symphony No. 4 in G Major
Mahler’s music and the city of Vienna are inseparable. At the dawn of the 20th century, the esteemed composer served as Principal Conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic. His fourth symphony was a response to Beethoven’s “Ninth,” the great composition incorporating themes of joy and utopia. This program is balanced by two works from one of Mahler’s mentors – Johannes Brahms, whose pieces in this concert both premiered with the Vienna Philharmonic. From mentor to maestro, it is quintessential Vienna!
Jorge Mester, conductor
Jorge Mester conducts the majority of Classics concerts as Music Director of the Louisville Orchestra. While Mester served as Music Director of the Louisville Orchestra from 1967 to 1979, he recorded 72 world premieres. Mester also serves as Music Director of the Naples Philharmonic.
