The University of Louisville men’s soccer team’s season came to an unfortunate end Sunday night.
Mamadou Kansaye’s penalty kick - via a questionable handball call - in the 23rd minute lifted the University of Maryland-Baltimore County to a 1-0 win over the 13th-seeded Cardinals in the NCAA Tournament’s Round of 16 at Lynn Stadium.
Louisville (11-8-3), which was making its fourth Sweet 16 appearance in five seasons, outshot the Retrievers 13-8, including 9-4 in the second half, but couldn’t overcome a slow start.
“It was a night where, in the first half, I felt like we wasted 45 minutes,” UofL coach Ken Lolla said afterward. “We didn’t put into it what we did in the second half and 45 minutes of effort wasn’t quite enough tonight. I was proud of how we responded in the second half. I thought the guys did tremendously well to create some really good chances.”
The two teams each had four shots in the first half with UMBC senior Kay Banjo’s attempt in the 23rd minute being the biggest one. Banjo’s shot struck a Louisville defender who was just inside the box and, after a brief conference between the officials, the Retrievers were award the PK. Kansaye then beat UofL goalie Joachim Ball to the upper left corner of the net for the lone goal of the match.
Ricardo Velazco and Tim Kubel led the Cards with three shots apiece, while Andrew Brody had two on goal.
The loss ended the careers of five UofL seniors, including Ball, defender Daniel Keller and Crestwood native Will Vitalis.

Lexington native Kyle Bolin came off the bench - and out of nowhere - to throw for 381 yards and three touchdowns (all to DeVante Parker) to lead the football team to a heated 44-40 victory over archrival Kentucky on Saturday afternoon at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium. Bolin replaced freshman quarterback Reggie Bonnafon who suffered a knee injury early in the game and did not return. The Cards (9-3), who are No. 21 in The Associated Press Top 25 and No. 22 in the College Football Playoff Rankings, will now await their postseason fate. They have been projected in several different bowl games, including the Orange.
The women’s basketball team improved to 7-0 with a pair of lopsided victories. The Cards lambasted Lafayette 102-61 Friday at the Yum! Center, then vexed host Valparaiso 86-59 Sunday afternoon. Against the Leopards, freshman forward

Henderson tallied a double-double (11 points, 11 rebounds) to lead Louisville to a 27-point win. The Cards, who are ranked No. 11 in the USA Today Coaches Poll and No. 12 in the AP poll, next host Iowa at 7 p.m. Thursday night.
