The University of Louisville football team, which has played on the road in four of the past five weeks, will try to make it a happy homecoming Saturday.

That’s when the Cardinals (5-2, 3-2) host North Carolina State in an Atlantic Coast Conference game - and their homecoming - at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m.

UofL will also be hoping to bounce back from its disappointing loss at Clemson.

Will Gardner will be back under center, at the start of the game at least, when Louisville takes on the Wolfpack (4-3, 0-3) - the ACC Atlantic Division cellar dweller - after nearly rallying the Cards to a win in Death Valley last Saturday.

N.C. State comes in having lost three in a row after winning its first four games. The Wolfpack’s three straight setbacks have come to Florida State, Clemson and Boston College by a combined 72 points. The Wolfpack hung with the Seminoles before the defending national champs prevailed 56-41. Then, they got blown out 41-0 by the Tigers and 30-14 by the Eagles.

Even though N.C. State doesn’t appear to be too formidable of a foe this is pretty much a must-win for the Cards if they want to play in a postseason bowl. That’s because Louisville’s next four opponents - Florida State, Boston College, Notre Dame and Kentucky - have a combined 21-3 record.

Here’s a quick look at what else there is to watch (or follow) in UofL sports this weekend:

    • The seventh-ranked field hockey team hosts a pair of games at Trager Stadium, where it has won 16 straight. The Cards (10-3) entertain No. 17 Boston College in an ACC match at 3 p.m. Friday and California at 2 p.m. Saturday.

    • The men’s soccer team (6-5-1), which ended its four-match losing streak with a 2-1 win over Florida Gulf Coast on Tuesday night, hosts second-ranked Syracuse in a key ACC match at 7:30 p.m. Friday night at Lynn Stadium.

    • Five members - Jeffrey Brown, Alex Gornet, Michael Lippens, Chris Simich and Albert Wagner - of the men’s tennis team and the women’s tennis team will compete in the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional in Nashville, Tenn.

    • The women’s swimming and diving team will compete in the SMU Classic, which begins Friday in Dallas.

    • The baseball team will wrap up fall workouts with its Pizza Bowl series. Vrable’s Victors beat the Kiekhefer Krush 2-1 thanks to Nick Solak’s RBI-single in Wednesday’s first game. The series continues at 3:30 p.m. Friday afternoon and concludes at 11 a.m. Saturday at Jim Patterson Stadium.

    • The women’s golf team will compete in the Mercedes-Benz Championship, which begins Friday in Knoxville, Tenn.

    • The volleyball team (11-7, 3-3) plays at Syracuse at 7 p.m. Friday night before playing at North Carolina State at 2 p.m. Sunday.

    • The men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete in the Pre Nationals at 11 a.m. Saturday in Terre Haute, Ind.

    • The women’s soccer team (6-6-2), which edged Northern Kentucky 1-0 Wednesday night on Kari Weinland’s goal, hosts third-ranked Virginia at 1 p.m. Sunday at Lynn Stadium.
