Maryssa Becker was nearly unhittable for the University of Louisville softball team Tuesday evening.

The sophomore right-hander gave up just one hit in the Cardinals’ 8-0 rout of archrival Kentucky in Lexington. Becker gave up only a lead-off single in the bottom of the first inning and cut down the 17th-ranked Wildcats after that, walking one and striking out eight in a six-inning, complete-game victory. Becker also helped her own cause with a home run and three runs batted in as UofL (25-14) avenged its April 1 4-0 loss to UK.

In that first meeting Kentucky’s Kelsey Nunley limited Louisville to five hits - three by Brittany Sims - while striking out six. Meanwhile the Wildcats tallied four earned runs on eight hits while benefitting from three walks. This time around Becker easily outdueled UK starter Shannon Smith and two relievers, who combined to give up 10 hits to the Cards. Louisville tallied two runs in the second and fourth frames, three in the fifth and one in the sixth.

In the second Hailey Smith walked with one out, then scored on Becker’s two-out, two-run homer. In the fourth Whitney Arion and Smith singled with one out before Kelsi Jones reached on a fielder’s choice (Smith was out at second) before Becker singled up the middle to score Arion. Tiarra Sanabria followed with an RBI-double down the right-field line to make it 4-0 in favor of UofL, which was coming off losses to No. 10 Florida State and Mississippi and a trio of rainouts. The next inning Jones’ bases-clearing double to center field gave the Cards a touchdown lead. Brittany Duncan added an RBI-single in the sixth to make it 8-0. Nikki Sagermann had the only hit for UK (28-17). Becker and sophomore Jordan McNary led Louisville’s 10-hit attack with two apiece.

The Cards return to Atlantic Coast Conference play this weekend, when they host Boston College. UofL, which is 12-5 and in fourth-place in the ACC, and the Eagles will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon. The two teams will play one game at the same time Sunday.
