A public forum titled Unveiling the New Speed: A Model of the Future will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. to reveal the Speed Art Museum’s Master Plan for the upcoming renovation and expansion of its historical site in Louisville. The forum will include a virtual tour of the project, allowing visitors to experience the future of Kentucky’s foremost art museum.
In addition, a discussion on shaping the art museum of the 21st century will feature keynote speakers Kulapat Yantrasast, wHY Architecture and lead architect for the project, Maxwell L. Anderson, Director, Indianapolis Museum of Art, and Charles Venable, Director, Speed Art Museum. The panel discussion will be held in the Speed’s auditorium. A question and answer session will follow the presentation. John Kett from the landscape architecture firm Reed Hilderbrand will be on hand to answer questions about the landscape design.
Admission is free to this event, but a reservation is required and can be made by calling 634.2970 or e-mail architecture@speedmuseum.org. Doors open at 9:00 a.m. Refreshments will be available from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m.
In conjunction with the forum, the exhibition Unveiling the New Speed: A Model of the Future will open to the public. The installation explores the transformation of the Museum from its founding in 1927 to the current Master Plan developed by architect Kulapat Yantrasast in association with landscape architects Reed Hilderbrand Associates Inc. Encompassing work on over 200,000 square feet of structures and green spaces, it will be the largest capital project ever undertaken by an arts and culture institution in Kentucky. Featuring a virtual tour and detailed model, Unveiling the New Speed: A Model of the Future allows visitors to step inside the new Museum. Exhibition is included with general Museum admission: free for members, $10 non-members.
Visitors will also be able to tour the exhibition Impressionist Landscape: Monet to Sargent and The Gardens of Giverny: A View of Monet’s World; Photographs by Stephen Shore for an additional fee (on view until May 22). Admission is $5 for members, $10 for non-members. Parking is conveniently located in the Museum’s garage for $2 per hour, $6 maximum for the full day.
