Here at the office, people seem to be split right down the middle regarding holiday cheer. There are those that have been humming festive songs while literally decking the halls, and there are others who have barely resisted their urge to kick the office Christmas tree. The conflicting attitudes are leaving me on the fence despite my desire to embrace the season. I procrastinated writing this Top 5 because I didn’t want it to be generic or insincere but the more I’ve thought about it I think I might know a few remedies to anyone who is feeling more “bah-humbug” than “happy holidays”. So here are the top 5 ways to get into the holiday spirit.
5.) Listen to holiday music- I know, I know, this doesn’t sound like my idea of a good time either but it’s not all bad if you personalize it a little. Instead of just tuning into the radio and settling for any headache inducing song that comes out of the speakers, chose an artist who you would normally listen to and purchase their Christmas album. You’d be amazed at how many artists have put out holiday albums that you didn’t even know about. I’ve been listening to one by Elvis and it’s quite nice.
4.) Entertainment with a seasonal twist- Instead of going to see the latest action movie, see one with a holiday theme. There are countless classics or try a new one. If watching a movie isn’t your thing, how about baking? Bake something and decorate it to coincide with whatever you’re celebrating, Christmas, Hanukah, or whatever else it maybe. Don’t like baking either? Well, go ice-skating, or torture your neighbors and go caroling with a group of friends-just do something!
3.) Be Selfish- That’s right, selfish. This year sp/files/storyimages/your time where and with whom you want to sp/files/storyimages/it. Instead of attending every party or gathering, spreading yourself so thin you barely have time to discuss the weather before dashing off to the next obligatory visit, focus on quality versus quantity this holiday season.
2.) Give what you can to those in need- You might think this is contradictory to # 3 but I would disagree. Whether you volunteer your time, or your money, giving not out of a sense of obligation, but out of gratitude for the blessings in your life and compassion for those less fortunate, is what this season is all about.
1.) Make a resolution you can honor- Instead of breaking promises to yourself yet again this year, resolve to take whatever from this list that made you feel good and do more of it through out the year.
Happy Holidays, and Best Wishes for the New Year!
