    Bit to Do

As the first full (autumn is here!) weekend approaches us in Louisville, families might be wondering what they can do together to celebrate. Here’s a list of my top 5 picks for the area:

    5.   Head to our area amusement parks together for some fall-friendly experiences at places like Holiday World, Kentucky Kingdom (this is the last weekend they will be open) or Paramont’s King’s Island.

    4.   Take a country drive along farm lands and horse fences through Oldham, Henry, and Trimble counties and arrive in the quaint town of Madison, Indiana. My family and I visit this town every fall; we love walking along the old-time sidewalks, window shopping and finding a little nook for a quick bite to eat. The local shops are always decorated for fall and the window displays make great photo opps! Walk along the Ohio River and enjoy the cool fall breeze and changing of the colors as fall rings in. This weekend, Madison is hosting their 44th annual Madison Chautauqua on September 27-28 from 10am-5pm each day. It is considered their premier outdoor arts and crafts festival, and with free admission and a Kids Korner tent of activities, it will be a great venue for families.

    3.   The Captain’s Quarters Regatta is this weekend, Saturday September 27 (12pm-4pm) and Sunday September 28 (12pm-3pm). Sit along the beautiful grounds of Captains Quarters in Prospect and watch more than 30 sailboats compete along the river. The event is free for spectators who wish to view the race, and there is also an accompanying art show. Captains Quarters is located at 5700 Captain’s Quarters Road.

    2.   On Sunday, September 28, the 11th annual Ken-Ducky Derby will take place in downtown Louisville on the wharf along the Ohio riverfront. This event is sure to delight everyone in your family: who wouldn’t love watching thousands of ducks float down the Ohio River toward a finish line, and hoping that one of yours crosses first! Adopt a duck and help Harbor House continue their great work for the lives of people living with disabilities. 13,332 ducks have been adopted so far; their goal is to get 23,000 ducks adopted for the race. Adopt one duck for $5, or packages of ducks for $25-$100. The race is from 12pm-5pm; lots of family fun will start at 12pm, including live music, a food court, games and more. At 4pm, the ducks will be dropped into the Ohio River for the race; cheer your ducks on to victory!

    1.   Head to the NuLu Festival on Saturday, September 27. In addition to it being one of Louisville.com’s Top 10 Autumn Hit List must do’s this fall, it’s completely jam-packed with fun for families. From Louisville Family Fun’s kids’ zone to the Louisville Mini-Maker Faire to a breakfast of doughnuts together with Hi-Five Doughnuts, there is sure to be something there to entertain everyone in your crew. It’s from 11am-11pm.
