In Squire Boone and Nicholas Meriwether: Kentucky Pioneers, author Ronald R. Van Stockum, Sr. examines the life of Squire Boone, whose actions and accomplishments were overshadowed by his more famous brother Daniel. The book also provides a look into the activities of Nicholas Meriwether, primarily a land locator, entrepreneur and settler, who arrived on the frontier three or four years later than Squire, and subsequently purchased his Painted Stone Station. This thoroughly researched biography includes a full account of the “Long Run Massacre” of 1781, in which Indians attacked settlers fleeing from the Painted Stone Station. Ronald R. Van Stockum, Sr. served for 30 years as a career officer in the regular Marine Corps, attaining the rank of Brigadier General. Shortly after his arrival in Kentucky, he commenced a second career of eleven years' duration as an administrative officer at the University of Louisville. Van Stockum is a past President and past Interim Director of The Filson, and the author of Kentucky and the Bourbons: The Story of Allen Dale Farm.
