Imagine the most gorgeous spring day in Kentucky, in a magnificent house filled with fine paintings, fresh fragrant spring flowers, strains of bluegrass music for cocktails, and fabulously gowned women and great vivacious guests, including Louisville Mayor Jerry and Madeline Abramson, in a party mood and you have ...

The 32nd annual Speed Museum Ball on March 5 had a sold-out crowd of 436 for dinner ($425 each) and 250 young guests who came after dinner for dessert and coffee ($125 each) who danced the night away with the famous Starlight Orchestra of New York City in the Ina Shallenberger Sculpture Court presided over by the Henry Moore marble "Reclining Nude!"

This Kentucky-enchanted evening began with an engraved invitation embossed with the historic front door (circa 1811) of Cottage Grove in Bardstown, the gift of John Speed and the late Anne Stewart Speed. The door conservation was funded by the Speeds, Rowland and Eleanor Miller, and Mr. and Mrs. Horace Speed III and it resides in the museum's Kentucky Collection, which was on view at the ball.

Arriving guests were greeted by spectacular urns of apricot roses and lilies, forsythia, white tulips and lilacs from Holland arranged by artist J.D. Myles of Simpsonville, who filled the party with lavish spring flowers worthy of Van Gogh. His wife Mary Helen was a Gainsborough painting in peony pink taffeta skirt, matching stole and black velvet top. Decor was designed by Lee Stough of Ewalds.

Guests were graciously received by curator Ruth Cloudman in a vintage fitted strapless black-and-white gown, along with museum director Peter Morrin; gala chair adorable Cindy Crockett in larkspur blue taffeta with handsome husband Tom; beautiful co-chair Karen Crain in pale green strapless gown with tiers of leaf-shaped silk organza came with her good-looking husband James T. Crain III.

Also receiving were board member and Speed Alliance president Doris Trautwein and her husband Richard, and Board of Governors member Richard Clay.

Generous corporate sponsors were National City Bank represented by Chuck and Donna Denny, Frank Hower Jr., and Rob and Laura King.
