Forecastle organizers announced today that they are adding another headlining band to the July 9-11 festival happening on the Waterfront next month. The Smashing Pumpkins join Widespread Panic and The Flaming Lips for an event that is quickly becoming one of the major music festivals in the nation. With its eclectic mix of great music (local, regional, and national acts), activism, and education, it has a quirky feel all its own.

The Smashing Pumpkins are hardly the same band that put out the classic Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness in 1995. In fact, every single member of that band has departed with the exception of frontman and singer Billy Corgan. That will probably not diminish the zeal with which fans will throng to the Waterfront. Corgan has said that the Pumpkins will no longer record "albums" -- those old-fashioned things -- but will instead release singles only on the Internet for free for a project called Teargarden by Kaleidyscope. Corgan has always marched to the beat of his own drummer (or whichever drummer he is employing at the time), which may make The Smashing Pumpkins the perfect band to represent a festival like Forecastle.

If Hullabaloo seems to be too much of a staid, classic 80s-rock fest for your tastes, Forecastle is the antidote. Bands with names like we were promised jetpacks, Foxy Shazam, and Morning Teleportation will rub shoulders with Spoon, Drive-by Truckers, Sara Watkins, and Cake. Punk marching bands, punk circus cabaret acts, and a Sustainable Living Caravan? Well, it's not exactly Bon Jovi, is it? Check out the full lineup at the Forecastle Web site where you can also get details on tickets, locations, and exhibitors.

Who are you most excited about seeing at Forecastle?
