Shackleford’s seventh-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile won’t likely be his racing finale.
Trainer Dale Romans said the 4-year-old chestnut son of Forestry will return to Churchill Downs next week and will have one more race before retiring to stud at Darby Dan Farm.
The Clark Handicap on Nov. 23 at Churchill is one of two races being considered for Shackleford.
“We might run him in the Clark,” trainer Dale Romans told the Churchill Downs press office. “We’ll see how he’s going into the race, but the plan right now is to go into (the Clark) or the Cigar Mile (at Aqueduct on Nov. 24). As long as he trains well, he’ll have one more race.”
If Shackleford goes in the 1 1/8-mile Clark, it will be his first race at more than a mile since he finished seventh in the 1 1/8-mile Donn at Gulfstream in February, according to the release.
