Just six weeks after visiting high schoolers from Serbia raised funds to benefit hungry local children, a different group of students from that European nation are helping another worthy Louisville organization.
This time the beneficiary is the River City Drum Corps. Now in its 20th year, the group is helping 200 local students develop the skills needed for personal, social and academic success—as well as for some killer drumming. And RCDC Executive Director Ron White ensures all members of RCDC interested in attending college receive scholarships to do so.
To raise awareness and funds for RCDC, the Serbian students have organized a free concert at 6 p.m. Nov. 15 at Actors Theatre in the Victor Jory Theatre (316 W. Main St.).
White is thrilled to receive the students' support. “They’re not so different from our kids,” he said. “And they’ve been just the catalyst we’ve needed to create this free concert for our community on Nov. 15. Please come and support our RCDC and the Serbian students, and enjoy some riveting music!”
The World Affairs Council of Kentucky and Southern Indiana is hosting the Serbian students during their two-week stay. Louisville's Jan Arnow is facilitating their program, which is also receiving support from LG&E and Actors Theatre. Prior to visiting Louisville, the students were in Vermont; their next and final stop will be Washington, DC.
