After surprising the sports community be leading her Lady Cards to the NCAA women’s championship game, Shoni Schimmel has just earned another accolade.
This comes after the guard was named as part of the U.S. women’s world university games team. The games are meant to pit the best women’s players in the world against each other, and the American team will open their tournament July 8th when they take on Belarus, they will follow this game up with games against the Czech Republic and Brazil; the games are set to be played in Kazan, Russia.
Schimmel competed with 33 of the top college women’s athletes in the country for her spot on the team, a native of Mission, Oregon Schimmel is currently a Junior Guard for the Cards, returning next year.
Louisville head coach in response to the honor mentioned how this is a great opportunity for Schimmel to represent not just her country, but the University of Louisville, as well as her Native American heritage, which showed their support in droves notably in the NCAA championship game.
In fact, Schimmel’s as well as her sister Jude’s stories regarding their heritage was told in a Discovery Channel documentary titled Off the Rez which aired the evening of the women’s NCAA championship. Schimmel’s younger sister, Jude also plays guard for the Cards.
