Beer in the late 1800s was a safer, more sterile beverage than water or milk, making beer the beverage of choice for many! The term "growler," American slang for a bucket of beer, originated as a result of children handling beer. Often a father, uncle or grandfather would s/files/storyimages/a child to fetch a fresh pail of beer at the corner tavern. If the child was not careful and splashed the beer out of the bucket, the old man was said to "growl."
Teenagers could make good money and get a free lunch when they showed up at work sites to pick up workers' pails and return from the tavern with pails full of fresh cold beer. These young entrepreneurs used long polls to carry a quantity of pails to refill on a single trip. This task became known as "rushing the growler."
