    Bit to Do

I love summer for a number of reasons—I love the heat, I love swimming, I love that the sun stays out until 9 p.m., and I love that I can get Virginia salt water taffy from Emery's Premium Ice Cream in Corydon. Emery's is an ice cream shop right out of the 1950s with its bright swivel bar stools and large metal counter. It's the kind of place that could easily be popular just because of its novelty, but novelty isn't the only pleasant thing there is to find at Emery's. There is also Virginia salt water taffy.

I love Virginia salt water taffy. I love it like some people love chocolate. Virginia salt water taffy is nothing like Laffy Taffy or other subpar knockoffs, so when I discovered that Emery was ordering barrels of Virginia salt water taffy every spring to sell throughout the summer, it became my new favorite place to take my daughter for ice cream.

Emery's sells 39 different flavors of taffy in baskets stacked all over the back of the shop. My personal favorite is the peppermint taffy, but I'll happily eat any flavor I can get my hands on. The taffy sells for 10 cents a piece. I've found that it's better if I limit myself to spending a couple of dollars on taffy per trip because I can easily eat five dollars worth of taffy in a week if it's lying around the house.

If you're not into candy, Emery's also has one of the best ice cream selections in Kentuckiana. If you decide to try some Emery's ice cream or taffy this summer, call before you drive to Corydon and make sure the shop is open—Emery's is family-operated and can have irregular hours of operation. If Corydon is too far of a drive for you, look for Emery selling his taffy at the Kentucky State Fair in August.
