    Recycle Louisville Fashion Show

Jacquelyn Poff, who was ‘made in Louisville’, says she loves the enthusiasm that everyone has to keep Louisville something. Whether it be green, for lovers, evil, weird or whatever. It’s about embracing new ideas, impacting change and standing up for what you believe in. She thinks it allows a growing city to maintain that small town feel. Jacquelyn’s personal passion is the ‘green movement’ which she has been involved in since she was able to pick out her own clothes. Thrifting and vintage finds have turned into a slight obsession. Finding someone else’s old and making it her new has definitely become a favorite pastime. She thinks Louisville is a nice shade of moss and well on it’s way to being really green, but is dependent upon the locals to support and drive the effort. So, she’s doing her part to inspire others to evaluate their choices and change daily rituals into earth friendly habits. During a recent trip to St. Augustine, Florida, Jacquelyn was motivated by a group of stylists who put on a fashion show with all recycled waste. Thoughts of “Why not?” and “How far could we go?” occupied her mind on the trip home. After a considerable amount of brainstorming and a little help from friends, an idea evolved.

Teaming up with Z Salon and Aveda, Jacquelyn brings fashion awareness in the form of a Recycle Louisville Fashion Show at Glassworks of Louisville on April 20, 2008. It’s all about the creative freedom of individuals who want to make a difference. All proceeds will go to the Ohio River Water Foundation. Anyone can donate items for the fashion show or for sale. The rules are simple; items should reflect fashion at it’s highest...reduced, reused and recycled. Clothing should create an avant-garde runway experience and can be made from anything that isn’t purchased new. Jacquelyn suggests looking towards items that would normally be discarded...for example, a burlap sack used to import coffee transformed into a dress. A skirt made from plastic grocery bags. Old clothing reworked to form new. The sky is the limit. When I asked Jacquelyn why, she simply said, “ I care about the earth that we live in, it is not ours to take advantage of.”
