The Louisville Fire and used auto parts retailer Pull-A-Part recently raised $8,800 for the Kentucky Harvest's "Blessings in a Back Pack" initiative which provides backpacks of non-perishable foods to Jefferson county public school children on reduced/free lunch.
"This partnership shows that when a corporate citizen wants to help the community, there's a way to make it happen," said Stan Curtis, USA Harvest/Kentucky Harvest founder. "As a result, we hope to serve nearly 20,000 meals to less fortunate children in Louisville and southern Indiana throughout the 2007 season."
Pull-A-Part donated $40 to the charity for every first down made by the Fire during its home games this season.
"The old saying goes - we can judge our society by how we treat our children," said Ross Kogon, Pull-A-Part chief of staff. "Pull-A-Part is honored to have the opportunity to provide assistance with these meals for the children of Jefferson County Public Schools. We are pleased to be partnering with a great organization like the Fire for such a wonderful and worthwhile cause as USA Harvest/Kentucky Harvest."
Kentucky Harvest's "Blessings in a Backpack" is designed to provide backpacks of non-perishable foods to public school children on reduced/free lunch. The program ensures the children have access to nutritious meals each weekend. The program currently serves more than 1,000 children in four Jefferson County schools.
"On behalf of the Jefferson County School Board, I want to thank Pull-A-Part for their support of our kids and families through their contribution to the International Harvest Backpack Program via the Louisville Fire Arena Football team," said Linda Duncan, District 5 school board member. "Families of students attending Atkinson and Roosevelt-Perry Elementary schools are very grateful for the added week/files/storyimages/support this program provides, and we all deeply appreciate the statement this support makes about Pull-A-Part's commitment to our community. Thank you, Pull-A-Part, for helping make Louisville an even better place to live and work.
Founded in 1997, Pull-A-Part is a fourth-generation, family-owned used auto parts retailer that provides low cost auto parts to the public as it properly prepares raw materials for metal recycling. With locations in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, North Carolina and Tennessee, and plans for expansion, Pull-A-Part strives to be a good neighbor in the communities it serves.
Kentucky Harvest was created to prevent hunger and get the food from where it is to where it's needed. Kentucky Harvest eventually evolved into U.S.A Harvest, a system born of logic and altruism, to feed the hungry. Volunteers pick-up surplus food from restaurants, hospitals and food suppliers and deliver it to missions, soup kitchens and people in need. To volunteer, call 502-894-9999 or log onto www.kyharvest.com.
The Louisville Fire arena football team joined the "af2" league as an expansion team and is currently owned by NFL Pro Bowl lineman Will Wolford. The Louisville Fire has earned five winning seasons in their seven year history, currently leading the Midwest division. Since 2001, the Louisville Fire have played all home games in "Freedom Hall" located at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center.
