To educate children of all ages about the importance of electric and natural gas safety, LG&E Energy has launched two online safety programs for students K-12. The websites are located at www.lgeenergy.com/kids.

Energy Underground is a website designed to educate students about natural gas. The websites are available free-of-charge to all science teachers in the Commonwealth, including the 1,153 schools in LG&E Energy’s service territory. The websites’ content is also coded so that science teachers recognize the material which is useful in preparing students for the Commonwealth Accountability Testing System (CATS).

“We’ve worked with teachers and administrators across the state to tailor the content of the electric universe and energy underground websites to incorporate Kentucky’s Core Content Curriculum,” said Laura Douglas, Director of External Communications for LG&E Energy. “Both websites plant the seeds of awareness early by teaching students the importance of electric and natural gas safety. In addition, the websites provide extensive information on the properties of light, heat, electricity and magnetism.”

Valeria Connor, District Science Resource Teacher for the Gheens Academy, assisted LG&E Energy in reviewing the websites’ content and determined how it applies to Kentucky’s Core Content Curriculum: “Not only do the websites teach safety, but they go a step further in offering comprehensive energy resources that will complement the lesson plans of science teachers statewide

LG&E Energy offers additional safety resources for children K-12, including the Louie the Lightning Bug Series, targeted for grades K-3 and Mini City Electric Safety Demonstrations, designed for grades 4-12 and beyond. For more information on these programs, visit www.lgeenergy.com/kids or teachers can call 1-800-786-7547 to schedule a safety demonstration.
