Point Break LIVE! is one of the more popular and interactive shows being produced at Art Sanctuary and the Alley Theater.
This show is a fun and interesting piece of cult theater that spawned from the movie Point Break, which starred Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze. The thing that really makes the show stand out is the role of Jonny Utah (played by Reeves in the movie), because the role is picked from the audience at each show. It seems the creators of the show figured anyone could play Reeves' part.
If you haven't been yet, you'll have to wait. The second run of Point Break Live! took place in January, but don't worry. The theater hopes to bring another run back later in the year, according to cast member Kenn Parks.
Parks plays Bodhi, whose character was originally played by Patrick Swayze in the movie. He does a wonderful job, and many have remarked that he really does Swayze justice. His "far out" personality reaches out to the audience, and he collaborates well, playing to the audience member portraying Utah.
The other surfers really take their characters over the top, playing up their extreme homo-eroticism, which is..funny. They make it funny. The funny part is they often aim it at the audience member portraying Utah. The poor audience member really doesn't know what they're getting themselves into when they jump on the stage to audition with a few others at the very beginning of the show.
One might wonder how the audience member even knows what to do or how to keep up with the fast paced storyline. There is a "production assistant" who drags him to and fro as she shoves cue cards in front of his face. Hallie Disdarevic brought a lot of playful energy to this role and makes you laugh at her cute aggression.
The audience doesn't really know what they're getting themselves into, either. If you want to be a part of the show and sit in the "high action" area, be sure to wear your theater-issued ponchos. These are to protect you from water, fake blood, and "other substances". The action from the show extends into the audience on many occasions, including bank robbers forcing audience members to the ground and asking for their money (also theater issued).
The entire cast and crew brought the stage and audience to life. This is one of those "must see" shows that you will come back and bring friends to. I've hauled friends to this show twice, and it's still hilarious. This show is NOT for kids or the "faint of heart" as is announced at the beginning of the show. It is very adult in nature with adult language, brief nudity, and sexual references.
