Pi Lambda Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. will give Louisville a taste of local flavor as they present its annual Derby City Men Who Cook Gala. The event will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, June 4, at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center, 9700 Bluegrass Parkway.
Guests, who pay for a $20 ticket in advance to one of the sorority members or $25 at the door, will be able to sink their teeth into appetizers, main courses and desserts. After sampling a variety of dishes, diners can vote for their favorites.
More than 20 cooks are expected to be on hand to compete for the prizes worth $100 each. The sorority also will present two $1,000 scholarships. Applicants are from Jefferson County Public Schools. The event also includes an exciting raffle.
WAVE 3 TV's consumer anchor and troubleshooter journalist Charla Young, who also is a member of the international sorority, will emcee the dressy affair. Young, who is a native of Amory, Miss., is a graduate of the University of Mississippi with a bachelor of arts degree in Radio, Television and Film with a double minor in Spanish and English.
The Tyrone Wheeler Trio will be a feast for the ears at the gala. The jazz group includes bassist Wheeler, drummer Ted Richardson and pianist Scott Thomas. The group has been performing together for about eight years. Wheeler's professional experience includes performing with the late drummer Buddy Rich in 1996 and late entertainer Sammy Davis, Jr.
Louisville Courier-Journal assistant food editor Ron Mikulak, who writes the weekly Cook?s Corner column, will serve as one of the local celebrity judges.
Pi Lambda Omega has been stirring up this delicious event since 1988. The sorority has awarded thousands of dollars in scholarships to dedicated students in Louisville. More than 200 people are expected to att/files/storyimages/the event.
Pi Lambda Omega of Louisville is a graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. The Greek-letter organization includes a membership of more than 170,000 women in the United States, the Caribbean, Europe and Africa.
