Griner will read from his new novel, The German Woman, which will be published on June 9th by Houghton Mifflin. The German Woman was inspired by the true story of a team of filmmakers who were tried for treason just after the United States entered World War I for making the film Spirit of '76, which was critical of our British allies. In his book, Griner examines questions of loyalty and patriotism during war, topics that are particularly relevant today. While thoroughly original, The German Woman is reminiscent of Michael Ondaatje's The English Patient and Alan Furst's atmospheric post-war novels.
Paul Griner was born in Boston, and grew up there and in New York. He earned a BA in History at the University of New Hampshire, an MA in Romance Languages and Literatures at Harvard, and MA in creative writing at Syracuse. He is the author of the acclaimed novel Collectors and the story collection Follow Me. His stories have been published in Playboy, Story, Bomb, Glimmer Train, Ploughshares, and other magazines. He is associate professor of English and Director of Creative Writing at the University of Louisville.
