Papa John's Pizza presented "Blue Apple on Broadway," a fund-raiser for the Blue Apple Players, at the Brown Theatre last Saturday evening. The event was held in celebration of its 30 years as a nonprofit professional theater company producing original musicals and educational theater programs for young audiences.
Musical numbers from original works written by artistic director and co-founder Geraldine Ann Snyder were performed by local celebrities and civic leaders.
It was a grand evening for a great cause and seen at the theater were Libby Voyles, Corky Sachs, Sug and Dan Schusterman, Bill Samuels, Jason Vincent, Steven Jones, Matelda and Jack Andrews, Luckett Davidson, Sumner MacDonald, Chris Sternberg, Lachlan and Carolyn Gaeta McLean, Natalie Andrews, and Lilly and Kathy Cary.
There was a lot of excitement and an Australian camera crew there because "Outback Jack" Vadim Dale and his fianc‚e, Natalie Franzman of Louisville, were there to introduce a segment of the program.
Natalie, a Sacred Heart Academy graduate, looks just like Paris Hilton, and Vadim is as cute as can be and one of the nicest people you can imagine.
Denton Randall held the evening together as the program's emcee.
Bernie Lubbers and Tony Cruise got the show off to a good start and the audience sat back and loved it. The costumes were creative and cute. "The Cruise Man" was the cutest city mouse you have ever seen.
Blair Anderson started acting as a child at Blue Apple. She is now at DePaul working on a BFA in acting. She sang like a pro.
Jim Voyles and David Lamb were two teen-agers (Jim said that was science fiction!) with raging libidos!
The Will Cary Band was good! The audience was rocking.
Bernard Minnis hit a home run with "If You Love Me, Read Me a Story." It brought home childhood memories and reminded us that we should do that every night for our children.
Tish Usher and Mikkaka Hardaway had the audience participating in the story of a BIG hairy spider.
Kirby Adams and Beth Andrews were "Looking for a Man" all evening long and finally caught Milton Metz.
Tim King sang "Seeing You Again" accompanied by Daniel Light. The song from "Audubon" was a heart breaker. The audience went wild.
Bobby J (Johnson) was a handsome dapper dude singing his way into your head while "Brat" Broecker had the audience laughing with the song "I'm a Brat" from "JoJo the Toymaker."
Candyce Clift was Miss Alexis Texas with the Singing Cactus Brothers - Larry McDonald, Rhody Streeter and Peter Morrin.
Troy Bell is big in the local musical scene and he was big on the stage, a favorite of the audience. He also was a third-grade student of teacher, David Thurmond.
Speaking of David, he and his wife Diane were "Two Cool Cats." And, who knew Tim Mathistad was such a fab singer!
Lamont Gillispie and his 100 Proof Blues Band were the perfect finale. They had the audience tapping their feet and movin' to the music. They could have played all night.
Special tribute was paid to Sara York, principal of Jefferson County Teen-age Parent Program (TAPP) for her contributions to Blue Apple. Sara and other TAPP staff were the lead technical advisors on "Consequences," Blue Apple's musical about teen-age pregnancy, and contributed greatly to that play's effectiveness as a change agent for children and teens.
Sara in turn recognized Georgia Chaffee, who pioneered TAPP and whose programs are used as a model across the nation.
Executive director and co-founder Paul Lenzi was happy with the community support for Blue Apple.
And a good time was held by all.
Florida parties
Eloise Burnett of Anchorage is in Florida for the winter. Recently she invited Bunny Barker and Betty Ann Broecker down for a visit. Eloise has a condo in Highland Beach on the fifth floor of the Ocean Pines with a wraparound balcony overlooking the Atlantic.
They arrived on Valentine's Day and June Hook invited them to the Little Club for dinner. At the next table were Cissy and Frank Hower, Cappy and Bruce Bass, and Peachy and Don Kohler. Mary Barbara and George Partlow were there with friends.
Eloise belongs to the Delray Beach Club and the girls ran into Jayne Nichols there when they went to hone their bridge-playing skills.
Ed Buchart, who has a handsome home on the water, invited the girls over for dinner and showed off his considerable cooking skills. They had a wonderful time.
Mary Ann and Charlie Davis held a dinner party at the Seagate. Is there anyone left at home?
