Who would have thought that Manchuria would capture our imaginations and our hearts? On the Radisson Seven Seas Mariner, we sailed up the East China Sea into Dalien, at the southern tip of the Liaodong Peninsula. Both Russia and the Japanese have had control of it over the centuries, but now it is definitely a Chinese city.
Our landing was held up for over an hour as the government authorities OK’d our getting off the ship, but the local police felt they should have the last word and they weren’t giving it. The ship had to mediate between the two bureaucracies. Finally we got off.
Physically, the main drag downtown is a wide boulevard fronted by absolutely lovely elegant Beaux Arts buildings from the early part of the 20th century. They are well maintained. Some have had multi-story towers built on top of them.
