While the Breeders' Cup looks like a blast, I spent my babysitting money last week on the My Morning Jacket show. Date events don't happen that often, but last weekend was worthy as we witnessed the giant spectacle of the Squallis Puppeteers bringing down the balloons after three solid hours of rock raucous. As "One Big Holiday" crooned through the well-lubed crowd, giant owls spun their heads with an international, dancing puppet parade on stage. It was a beautiful scene, truly Louisville.
This Saturday, November 6th, is the Squallis Puppeteers' "First Saturday Show and Workshop" located at their studio, School of Sharks Theater, at 770 Eastern Parkway. On the first Saturday of each month, Squallis opens their doors to the public to view a performance and create a puppet. This family-friendly event costs only $5.00 a head and begins at 1:00 (doors open at 12:45) and wraps up by 3:00. This month's show is titled "Plank's Story" and is sure to be, like everything they do, unforgettable.
Bernheim Forest will also host their first Saturday event, "ECO Kids Pollywog Play Parties." The workshops offer parents and children 5 and under to participate in music, art, language, and outside play to encourage infants and children to learn about nature. This weekend's workshop is themed "Catching the Wind" and according to Bernheim's website, kiddos will, "...discover the secrets of catching the wind through stories, songs, and hands-on-activities." Besides the $5 per car entrance fee, the workshop is free to members and non-members, but registration is required. Call (502) 955-8512 to reserve your space.
So, forget the overpriced outfit, the mascara and heels, the betting money (and babysitter) you don't have, and head out to one of these Louisville family-friendly events. Breeders' Cup, Schmeeders' Cup...
