Lehman-Francis stepped down Monday after 15 years with WDRB-TV, which included the launch of the station’s highly successful “News at 10,” the start-up and revamping of “Fox in the Morning,” and the creation of midday and afternoon news broadcasts. She had been news director since 2000.

“The job was rewarding but exhausting,” she said. “I’ll miss the people but I won’t miss the hours.”

Lehmann-Francis, who is married to WDRB anchor-reporter Bill Francis, tried to resign last summer, but general manager Bill Lamb persuaded her to reconsider.

Neither Lamb nor Lehmann-Francis would confirm a rumor that her departure was linked to Lehmann-Francis’ recent decision to name newcomer Marc Weinberg chief meteorologist over long-time contract meteorologist Tara Basset.

“I can’t discuss personnel situations,” said Lamb. “But I have the highest respect and regard for Kathy. I will miss her intellect and experience.”

Lamb said assistant news director Barry Fulmer has been named acting news director, and that the station would not be interviewing for Lehmann-Francis’ position for several months.

Lehmann-Francis began her news career in Louisville 25 years ago as an assistant producer during Hal Stopfel’s tenure at WHAS-TV. She said a career change now was an option, but didn’t rule out returning to a TV newsroom.

“I’m a passionate person with an opportunity to do something new,” she said. “That’s kind of exciting.”
