Sullivan University College of Pharmacy will host its Second Annual Nanotechnology Symposium Advances in Nanotechnology and Applications at the College of Pharmacy on Gardiner Lane on Friday and Saturday, October 9—10.
Professionals, students of all education levels and anyone who has an interest in furthering their knowledge of nanotechnology are invited to attend this two-day symposium that will feature more than 30 researchers and educators from around the country presenting on cutting-edge innovations. In addition, there will be two interactive workshops geared for high school teachers but open to anyone who wishes to attend.
Symposium sessions include: Nanoparticulate Drug Delivery Systems, RNA Nanotechnology, Nano Education and Manufacturing and Mechanical Properties of Nano Systems. Presenting researchers come from disciplines of pharmaceutics, chemical engineering, neurobiology, medicine, biomedical engineering, physics, electrical and computer engineering, among others.
Podium presentations will allow researchers to share and explain their findings and give the opportunity for interested parties to ask questions. Poster sessions, an award ceremony and numerous networking opportunities will be available.
Speakers at the inaugural event will include Dr. P. Breckinridge Jones, CEO of US World Meds, LLC, Chancellor/President Sullivan, of Sullivan University System and Dr. Hieu Tran, Founding Dean of Sullivan University College of Pharmacy.
Featured keynote presentations for the 2009 Nanotechnology Symposium include:
• Nanostructured Solar Cell Devices - Vijay Singh, Ph.D.
• What’s Been Learned About Nanotechnology - John DiLoreto
• Drug Development of Nanoparticulate Bio-Pharmaceuticals - Judy Senior, Ph.D.
• RNA Nanotechnology and Nanomedicine - Peixuan Guo, Ph.D.
There will be an exhibition area for research companies to demonstrate their products and equipment. Exhibition space is still available by contacting Allison Koch. The full schedule is available online at: http://www.sullivan.edu/pharmacy/pdf/Program_for_CC.pdf
The Center for Nanotechnology Education, Research and Applications (CENTERA), a project of the College of Pharmacy, will host the interactive workshops established by the National Center for Learning and Teaching (NCLT) at Northwestern University. Sarah Dugan and Matthew Hsu, of NCLT, will head up the workshops on Saturday, October 10, 2009, 10 a.m.—4 p.m. The cost is $50 per person. High school teachers are encouraged to take part and will receive a 50 percent discount to attend. The sessions include:
• Introduction to the Nanoscale: Inquiry into Surface Area - This is an introduction into the nanoworld, which shows the importance of surface areas increase at the nanoscale.
• Manipulating Light in the Nanoworld - This workshop explores size-dependent properties of nanoscale material through their interaction with light. Light emission of macroscopic and nanoscale light sources are examined.
CENTERA will also offer a discounted rate to symposium attendees for its first publication, Advances in Nanotechnology and Applications Volume I, which includes proceedings from the First Annual Nanotechnology Symposium. The sale price of the book during the symposium will be $25.
Registration for the Symposium and Workshops can be made by contacting Allison Koch at 502-413-8955 or e-mail akoch@sullivan.edu.
Sullivan University College of Pharmacy also wishes to acknowledge the sponsors for the Second Annual Nanotechnology Symposium: US World Meds, Krispy Kreme, Heine Brothers, The National Center for Learning and Teaching at Northwestern University, InflaMed Inc., NIH Nanomedicine Development Center, UofL Micro/Nano Technology Center, Sullivan University College of Pharmacy, Sullivan University Systems, Specialty Coating Systems, Institute for Advanced Materials and Renewable Energy.
ABOUT SULLIVAN UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF PHARMACY:
Sullivan University has been preparing students for careers for more than 45 years. The College of Pharmacy is the most recent addition to the University. The College of Pharmacy offers an accelerated program, allowing students to earn their Doctor of Pharmacy degree in three years (after 2 years of pre-requisite courses) rather than the typical four professional years. The College currently consists of two departments, Clinical & Administrative Sciences and
