Some may call Rolling Stone a dinosaur, but the magazine’s editors still know what we locals have for some time now: Kentucky bands know how to rock.
In a newly unveiled year-end recap of the “50 Best Albums of 2011,” local favorites My Morning Jacket and Cage the Elephant (okay, they’re from Bowling Green, but still) not only placed, but placed high, with MMJ’s Circuital at #11 and Elephant’s Thank You Happy Birthday close behind at #15.
RS called Cage the Elephant’s breakthrough album “retro but undeniably fun,” likening the sound to Nirvana and the Pixies crossed with ‘60s garage rock for a “modern digital polish.” In a review from January of this year, RS called the group “one of rock's best young bands.”
MMJ’s May release was given nothing but accolades (frontman Jim James is a “golden-voiced everydude”), with the band itself labeled “America's great Southern-visionary rock band.” RS pronounced Circuital “Part Isaac Hayes orchestral soul, part Pete Townshend high-concept rock.” Circuital also received a Grammy nomination in the category of Best Alternative Music Album.
British powerhouse Adele took top honors with her sophomore album, 21.
