A Musical Evening with Harry Pickens - Cocktails and Confections - Featuring Music From The Filson’s Special Collections.
The pianist and composer Harry Pickens will play music that he has selected from The Filson Historical Society’s large collection of 19th and 20th century sheet music. This collection contains over 4,700 items and is heavily concentrated on Kentucky. Much of the collection reflects the popular music of the day, including patriotic marches and romantic ballads.
As a jazz pianist, Pickens has performed in 17 countries throughout Europe, the Americas and Japan, collaborating with many stellar names in the jazz world such as Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard and Milt Jackson of the Modern Jazz Quartet. He has recorded on the Blue Note label and appeared on national and international television and radio shows, including National Public Radio’s “Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz,” an inside look at pianists, composers and the music of jazz. Pickens currently lives in Louisville, Kentucky.
