Registration begins at most sites on April 3

Mayor Jerry Abramson announced today that children ages 6 to 12 can sp/files/storyimages/eight weeks of summer vacation in structured Metro Parks day camps that provide safe, fun and educational enrichment opportunities. The camps – offered June 5 to July 28 at 17 locations throughout Louisville – allow children to experience sports, arts and the great outdoors in a wholesome environment.

Registration begins April 3 on a first-come, first-served basis at 14 community centers and one local school.  Douglass Community Center’s registration begins April 10, and Jefferson Memorial Forest’s registration is already underway.  A non-refundable $15 registration fee, to cover processing and T-shirt expenses, is due at the time of registration.  Camp fees range from $20 to $95 weekly, depending on the activities offered at each site.  Camps will not be in session on July 4.

"Our day camps offer parents a great way to ensure that their children are involved in positive activities over the summer," said Abramson. "We encourage kids to adopt a healthy lifestyle, while exposing them to arts, nature, and sports.  And, of course, we make sure they have lots of fun!"

Most camps begin at 8:30 a.m. and /files/storyimages/at 6 p.m. An early bird program, allowing drop-off between 7 and 8:30 a.m., is available for an extra $4 per day at some locations. Partial scholarships are available at most locations for those who can demonstrate financial need. Additionally, discounts are available for multiple camp participants from the same family. Residents from outside Louisville Metro can att/files/storyimages/Metro Parks camps for an additional $10 per child each week.

Jefferson Memorial Forest’s camps take place on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with different nature immersion programs each week.  The $15 one-time registration fee does not apply at this camp.

To support the City of Parks
initiative that is expanding and improving Louisville’s park system, summer camps will focus on building participants’ appreciation for nature, parks and green space, while encouraging them to become good stewards of our environment.  Arts and craft projects will focus on park landscapes and other nature themes.  Support for these efforts will come from Brightside, Otter Creek Park, Jefferson Memorial Forest, and the Metro Parks Teen Team.

Metro Parks is hiring seasonal help for summer camps, swimming pools, and park maintenance. Applicants must be at least 16 years old.  Information is available by calling 456-8152. Additionally, those ages 13 and 14 – who are too old for most camp programs but too young for summer camp employment – can att/files/storyimages/some camps as junior camp counselors.
