Last year, I saw Mac Miller for the first time at the Mercury Ballroom, when he sold out the standing-room-only venue during his GO:OD AM Tour. So when I saw that he was bringing The Divine Feminine Tour to Louisville this year, I knew I couldn’t miss it.
A lot can change in a year, but one thing is clear. Louisville STILL loves Mac.
This year, he was performing at the Louisville Palace, and the crowd was less chaotic than at Mercury with its mock mosh pit. Fans were elbow to elbow in the auditorium style orchestra seating, anticipation buzzing as we all waited.
You might wonder what kind of crowd Mac Miller brings to his concerts. It’s true; his fans tend to skew younger. But what would you expect from a 24-year-old who just recently confirmed that he’s dating Ariana Grande? He's the ‘It-man’ in teen culture right now.
ClockworkDJ opened the night on the turntables, performing his single "Friends" in addition to spinning many other trendy songs. It was the first time I’ve ever heard "Mr. Brightside," by The Killers, at a hip-hop show.
Shortly after the opening performances, the studio album cover of The Divine Feminine lit up the stage, and the low roar of the fans’ built into a crescendo as we cheered for Mac.
He came out to "Cinderella" ft. Ty Dolla $ign from The Divine Feminine, and the crowd loved it. He played several other songs from his new album, including "Congratulations," "Stay" and the popular single "Dang!" His other albums made appearances too, as he tossed in singles from GO:OD AM, Macadelic, Blue Slide Park and his 2014 mixtape Face.
One thing is clear: Mac Miller brings the energy to his concerts every single time. The props are beautifully done, the lighting is incredible and his beats mesh with the venue’s acoustics to create a beautiful melody. Whether he’s standing in the center with his mic stand or swaggering across the stage, he erupts with passion - and the fans respond in kind.
“It’s a pleasure to be out here,” said Mac, amid the crowd’s raucous excitement. “Thank you to everyone for coming out this evening. You could be spending money on anything, but you spent the money to spend the evening with me. I appreciate that.”
Mac – Let’s not let a good thing go to waste. We’ll see you next year.
