Besides buying overpriced, appallingly pink candies and filling out hordes of Valentines so as not to leave any classmate candy-heartless, there isn’t really much for the kiddos on Valentine’s Day. They don’t drink wine and taking them out to dinner would quash Romeo’s romanticism. But thanks again to the 8th annual Squallis Puppeteers “Fools for Love” fundraiser, Louisville has a Cupid-inspired event that is family friendly.

Next Saturday, February 12th, from 6-10 p.m. the Squallis Puppeteers will entertain lovers of all ages with a live puppet performance, live music, a silent auction, and a collection of love-themed puppet activity booths. Children can craft their own finger puppets, take pictures with their favorite gigantic ones, send secret messages via Cupid, and of course gorge on a variety of sweets and pastries from local eateries such as Nord’s Bakery and Comfy Cow.

Parents may walk away a little smitten themselves, since the event features live music, The Junk Yard Dogs (featuring members of Black Diamond Heavies, Lucky Pineapple, and The Ladybirds) and $2 drinks from BBC and Brown Forman. A silent art auction will also be held.

    Schedule is as follows:

    6:00PM Doors Open

7:00PM Live Puppet Performance: The Dating Game

8:30PM Live Music: The Junk Yard Dogs

    6-9:00PM Silent Art Auction

Admission to the event (770 Eastern Parkway) is on a sliding scale: a $10 (minimum) - $25 (suggested) adult admission and tickets for the booths are $2 each. All profits benefit this local treasure to Louisville’s landscape--anytime you’ve seen a giant puppet floating through the crowd at a local event, you know what I mean.

If you’ve somehow lucked into a date night that evening, remember the 1st Saturday of every month, from 1:00-3:00, Squallis hosts a puppet show and puppet-making workshop at their headquarters for $5. My children adored it (as did I).
