Franklin Circuit Judge Phillip Shepherd heard more arguments Wednesday from state workers suing to block Gov.     • "Democrat Greg Fischer has inched ahead in the race to become Louisville’s next mayor, but his lead is so thin that political experts say turnout — and perhaps the coattails of candidates in the U.S. Senate race — could make the difference on Election Day. A new Courier-Journal/WHAS11 News Bluegrass Poll conducted by SurveyUSA shows Fischer with 47 percent, leading Republican Hal Heiner by two percentage points.     • "Liquor maker Brown-Forman Corp.'s fiscal first-quarter profit fell 8% on pressured margins, while sales of its leading brands rose. The Louisville, Ky., distiller of Jack Daniels and Southern Comfort has posted higher revenue in the past few quarters as consumers' spending on drinks rebounded. Chairman and Chief Executive Paul Varga, while noting 'a sluggish environment,' said Wednesday that 'we posted good underlying growth in sales,' driven by 'strong net sales' internationally."     • "Churchill Downs has canceled plans for a night-racing card on Halloween, which falls on the traditional Sunday opening day of its fall meet. The track will have only one night card at the 21-day meet — Friday, Nov. 19. The Oct. 31 opening day starting time will be 12:40 p.m." [Courier-Journal]
