This week I am working for In Bloom Again, at the Galt House, selling men's and women's hats. As a born and raised New Yorker, this whole hat thing is fascinating to me. In New York, like the rest of the country, you wear hats for two reasons; cold and baseball. I am thoroughly enthralled with all that goes in to the Derby Hat buying and wearing experience. So I thought I'd share all the tips I've collected from all of my new Louisville friends. Remember, I'm not an expert, but just passing on the knowledge that I've learned in the last few months.
-Buy your hat first and then find a dress to match...it's just easier.
-If you did get your dress first, go to a shop where they sell embellishments and custom make your hat.
-Your hat color should match your dress color perfectly.
-If you are going to Oaks and Derby you need two different hats.
-Women's hats should be worn on the top of the head, not tilted back, but shadowing over one eye, preferably with the embellishments showing towards the tilt.
-Embellishments go directly to the front center or just off center in the front of the hat.
-The bigger the better.
-Your hair should be worn completely off your face, either pulled back, or if worn down it should be behind your ears...some people even poo poo bangs showing.
I hope this is helpful for all the other Yankees and out-of-towners like me!
