The University of Louisville men’s basketball team didn’t play a game in the NCAA Tournament on Thursday, but the city still had a big day on the first full day of the Big Dance.

Four Louisville natives, and one former Cardinal, all helped their teams to second-round victories.

Eastern High School graduates Remy Abell and Kameron Woods, Ballard grad Kelan Martin and former Louisville resident D’Angelo Russell, as well as former UofL player Kevin Ware, all played key roles in their respective teams’ triumphs.

Abell, a 6-foot-4 starting junior guard for Xavier University, tallied eight points in the sixth-seeded Musketeers’ 76-57 triumph over 11th-seeded Mississippi in the West Region in Jacksonville, Fla. He was 3 for 5 from the field, including 1 of 2 from 3-point range, and 1 for 1 from the free throw line while also registering two assists and one rebound in 30 minutes.

Woods, the 6-9 starting senior forward for Butler, had nine points and nine rebounds in the sixth-seeded Bulldogs’ 56-48 victory over 11th-seeded Texas in the Midwest Region in Pittsburgh. He was 2 for 3 from the field and 5 of 8 from the free throw line while also recording one assist and one steal in 37 minutes.

Meanwhile Martin, a 6-6 freshman forward, tallied seven points off the bench for Butler in its victory. He was was 3 for 5 from the field, and 1 of 1 from the free throw line, while committing one turnover in 15 minutes.

Then there was Russell, who attended Central High School as a freshman before transferring to Montverde Academy in Florida. The 6-5 freshman point guard for Ohio State recorded a game-high 28 points in the 10th-seeded Buckeyes’ 75-72 overtime victory over seventh-seeded VCU in the West Region in Portland. He was 10 for 20 from the field, including 4 for 7 from 3-point range, and 4 of 7 from the free throw line while also registering six rebounds, two steals, two blocks, one assist and committing four turnovers in 44 minutes.

Ware, a member of Louisville’s 2013 national title team who suffered a broken leg in the Cards’ Elite Eight win over Duke that year, is in his first season with Georgia State. The 6-2 junior guard scored four points and dished out three assists in the 14th-seeded Panthers' 57-56 upset of third-seeded Baylor in a West Region game in Jacksonville. He was 2 for 8 from the field, including 0 of 2 from 3-point range, while also recording two rebounds and two steals in 29 minutes.
