In the midst of perfect baseball weather on Sunday UofL defeated West Virginia 6-3, that win gave the Cards the series, and gives them a solid conference start.
After today’s game the Cards are set for a series of away games opening with Western Kentucky in Bowling Green, who they previously beat at Jim Patterson Stadium, followed by a conference series with Cincinnati.
Then, on the twelfth their homecoming game is (who else) Kentucky.
On Sunday the bleachers were packed for the always free ballgame, while kids ran down foul balls.
The Cards have seemed to be a late game team, taking their lead in later innings against the Mountaineers, who struggled with pitching. Finally finding a closer in the bottom of the sixth, who got them out of the inning, and set them up for a comeback; that the offense had trouble delivering, despite being a hard hitting ball club.
Louisville on the other hand, offered a more methodical approach than pure slugging, rather they found their victory in steady base hits and stealing.
Having some problems in the field the Cards were able to quickly fix these issues holding the Mountaineers to three, scored early in the ball game, this coming after West Virginia winning the series opener, while Louisville found a win on Saturday.
In many ways the difference between the wins for each team represent the dichotomy between the two; the Mountaineers coming on strong in the early game, while Louisville takes its time to study their opponents to find a win in the second two games.
Louisville’s coming off of two back to back conference championships, and has been delivering on the expectations established from those wins.
Plus I’m pretty sure I saw Louie the Cardinal doing the duck walk to Queen and David Bowie’s Under Pressure, and quite frankly when I see that I feel like it was an afternoon well invested.
