Brian Anthony Muth had a bright future.
He was a driven young man who graduated third in his class at Trinity High School in 2003. He strove to be the best, yet as he was about to begin his sophomore year at the University of Kentucky after transferring from Saint Louis University, his life was cut short by a tragic accident.
In the early morning hours of Aug. 24, 2004, Muth, 19, was struck and killed by a truck on a highway in Lexington.
Needless to say, the accident devastated the Muth family; however, just months later, a tiny measure of good has sprung from the tragedy.
After the accident, the grieving Muths requested that donations be made to Trinity in lieu of flowers, and what started as a simple request has grown into the Brian Muth Scholarship Fund.
So far, about $20,000 has been collected for the fund, said Michael Muth, Brian’s father.
Last week, on the day after Thanksgiving, more than 100 of Brian’s family and friends gathered at Oldham County Country Club for a golf scramble, raffle and dinner, and in the process raised at least $10,000 for the scholarship fund.
More than 50 businesses and organizations sponsored the event, including Brian’s fraternity, Delta Sigma Phi, and Saint Louis University.
Michael Muth said that the men of the Muth family have had a long-standing tradition of playing golf on the day after Thanksgiving and that Brian was an avid golfer who worked at Hurstbourne Country Club for several years.
“He grew up on golf courses,” said Muth, who added that the scramble was not publicly promoted. “We really wanted this to be about family and friends.”
Susan Felts, who is the mother of one of Brian’s friends, Wes Felts, helped get area businesses to sponsor the event and was very pleased by the turnout at the scramble, which is set to become an annual event.
“We were shocked at how fast this whole thing came together,” she said.
