The University of Louisville Hite Art institute is proud to sponsor The 2011 Allen R. Hite Endowed Lecture delivered by renowned art historian Dr. Linda Nochlin on Thursday, March 31 at 6:00pm in the Speed Museum Auditorium. Her lecture is titled: Misère: Courbet, Millet, and the Representation of Poverty in the Nineteenth Century.
In addition to this Lecture, Professors Linda Nochlin and Jongwoo Jeremy Kim will hold a public conversation on modern art, women, and desire on Thursday, March 31 at 10:00am at the University in the Chao Auditorium in Ekstrom Library.
Dr. Linda Nochlin is the Lila Acheson Wallace Professor of Modern Art at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. In addition to her article, “Why Have There Been no Great Women Artists?,” her books such as Representing Women and the Body in Pieces have revolutionized the way we think about gender and sexuality in art today. Equally important is her scholarship on realism, class struggles, and Gustave Courbet. She is also an international authority on how contemporary art treats the body and desire.
