The last phase of construction on Waterfront Park will soon begin, now that the Waterfront Development Corporation has acquired the needed land.

The site, located just west of the Big Four Bridge, was purchased from Lafarge North America Inc. for $3.5 million.

Waterfront Development Corporation President David Karem says the deal is a  major step forward.

The property has been appraised at $7 million, and Lafarge is donating the balance of the land's value to the community.

Construction on Phase 3 of the park will begin in late January.

The third phase will include a pedestrian walkway across the river, picnic areas, additional lawn areas and tree groves.

At the completion of the final phase, Waterfront Park will total more than 85 acres.
