Verdi’s LA TRAVIATA explores the world of the French courtesan Violetta and her doomed love of Alfredo, a member of the wealthy class. The touching score is filled with lavish party scenes and unforgettable music often heard in pop culture.
The libretto by Francesco Maria Piave was based on the Alexadre Dumas fils novel LA DAME AUX CAMELIAS (THE LADY OF THE CAMILLAS). The opera in three acts will be sung in Italian with English translations above the stage. Giuseppe Verdi’s LA TRAVIATA made its world premiere at Teatro La Fenice, Venice Italy on March 6, 1853 and was last performed by Kentucky Opera in October 2002.
