Churchill Downs Racetrack unveiled its logo for the May 2 Kentucky Derby and May 1 Kentucky Oaks. Along with the logos, the officially licensed apparel of the Kentucky Derby and the Kentucky Oaks was released and now available for purchase online at the Kentucky Derby Store.

The Kentucky Derby logo pays homage to the trademark Twin Spires before a backdrop of mint and kelly green stained glass, with the spires and Kentucky Derby bolded in a deep violet.  The logo is fresh, yet familiar and will look fabulous on the collectible mint julep Derby glass.

The Kentucky Oaks logo, on the other hand, is a bit too familiar to logos used in the past. It features the stylized horseshoe holding the Kentucky Oaks 141 imagery with the stargazer lily as the focal point of the base.

Both logos were created by SME, a New York-based marketing agency that has designed the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks logos since 2007.

“Each running of the Kentucky Derby represents a unique moment in the sporting calendar and thus, it is important to keep giving Derby fans something new and exciting to look forward to each year,” said Ed O’Hara, Senior Partner at New York-based SME, “The 'stained glass' treatment is a fresh and exciting approach to the Derby brand yet still maintains the aspiration and class that the event is built on.”
