The Kentuckiana Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Hosts its 12th Annual Celebrity Golf Classic at Lake Forest Country Club
Both Local and National Sports Celebrities Will Be in Attendance to Join in the Fight to Cure Juvenile Diabetes
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (May 3, 2010) --- On Monday, May 10 at 11:00 a.m., the Lake Forest Country Club will welcome golfers and sports celebrities to the 12th Annual Sports Trivia Golf Classic & Auction. Proceeds from this event support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and its efforts to find a cure for type 1 diabetes.
Local businessmen and avid golfers Val Henson & Greg Caldwell will return as co-chairs of the event. Between the two men, they have four daughters with type 1 diabetes. These dedicated fathers, along with their families and friends, work tirelessly to raise funds for JDRF to support type 1 research. Their hard work in ensuring the success of this event and their commitment to finding a cure has raised almost $1,000,000 since its origination 12 years ago.
The event is the brain child of Val and Diane Henson whose three daughters all suffer from juvenile diabetes. After a low blood sugar almost claimed the life of their youngest daughter, the Hensons were inspired to create an event that would appeal to the local community and beyond. Celebrities in attendance for this event include 1965 World Series pitcher Jim “Mudcat” Grant, former Chicago Bears coach Buddy Ryan, Kentucky basketball legend Rick Robey, former Cincinnati Bengals fullback Pete Johnson and jockeys Corey Nakatami, Robby Albarado, Brian Hernandez Jr. and Corey Lanerie.
At Sports Trivia, golfers and celebrities enjoy a Pro Am style tournament. Each registered foursome partners with a sports celebrity and on-the-course play features a Wells Fargo sponsored Hole in One contest, putting contests, food by both Smiley’s BBQ and Famous Dave’s, bourbon tastings by Kentucky Bourbon Distillers, cigars provided by Cox’s Smoker’s Outlet, Bloody Marys prepared by Bill Lockard and much more. Following the day on the course, golfers and JDRF supporters will enjoy dinner and cocktails during a live and silent auction. Auction items for this year’s event include autographed prints from this year’s Oaks and Derby winners, a Churchill Downs suite for 40, a Maker’s Mark Distillery tour for 10 with limo service, a guitar signed by John Mellencamp and vacation getaways.
Golf foursomes for this event are still available and cost $1,500 per foursome or $375 for an individual golfer. Tickets to the dinner and auction can be purchased for $50 for an adult and $25 for a child. Contact Tara Denham, Development Coordinator, for more details, at tdenham@jdrf.org or (502) 495-9397.
About Type 1 Diabetes
Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes, is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food. Type 1 diabetes accounts for only 10% of all cases of diabetes and lasts a lifetime for the children and young adults afflicted it.
About the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation
JDRF, founded 40 years ago by concerned parents and individuals intent on finding a cure for this debilitating and life threatening disease, is a worldwide leader in funding research to cure type 1 diabetes. JDRF sets the global agenda for diabetes research and is the largest charitable funder of and advocate for diabetes science worldwide. Our mission is constant: to find a cure for type 1 diabetes and its complications through the support of research.
