Floyd County Historian, David Barksdale, will talk about the history of plate glass in New
Albany, which began in 1869 when John B. Ford’s New Albany Glass Works became the first
company in the United States to manufacture plate glass. The first American-made plate
glass window was installed in clothier and merchant tailor John Hieb’s store at 316 - 318
Pearl Street in New Albany. In 1875, G.B. Alberts founded Alberts Stained Glass Studio
(now Architectural Glass Art, Inc.) in Louisville. The company would go on to earn a
reputation for its original designs and high level of craftsmanship. That tradition
continues today and Ken von Roenn, current President of Architectural Glass Art, will share
that history and information about the development of architectural glass. Free and open to the public.
