Louisville residents apparently like the way the new Metro Council has governed the past two years.
All incumbents were re-elected to the council, which held elections Nov. 2 for representatives in even-numbered districts. Elections in odd-numbered districts will be held in 2006. The term of office is four years.
“When every incumbent is universally re-elected, which they were, it tells us that the entire community thinks we’re doing an acceptable job,” said Metro Council president Kelly Downard, a Republican from District 16 in the East End. “I was uniformly pleased with the results.”
Downard won re-election handily, beating Democrat Art Hoffman by a vote of 12,274 to 4,850.
“Seventy-five percent of the people of the community voted and this indicates they are watching closely what we do, and they will for the next two years when the other group comes up for re-election,” he said.
Democrats continue to hold the majority of seats, 15 to the Republicans’ 11, on the council.
In District 2, Barbara Shanklin, the incumbent Democrat, beat her Republican challenger Yvonne Woods by a vote of 7,009 to 2,149.
