THE STEAMBOAT
She's the ninth steamer to bear the name NATCHEZ. It was her predecessor, NATCHEZ II, that raced the ROBERT E. LEE in the most famous steamboat race of all time, and even today, our NATCHEZ is proudly the undisputed champion of the Mississippi, never having been beaten - the best of her time. Her powerful antique steam engines were built in 1925 and are still on view today from our engine room. Her copper bell, inlaid with 250 silver dollar coins to produce a purer tone, once graced the SS JD Ayres. Her 32-note steam calliope was custom-crafted and modeled especially for the NATCHEZ. A cruise on the NATCHEZ is truly an exciting event. For all its history and romance, a cruise on the NATCHEZ is fun and it is coming to you!
THE ENTERTAINMENT
The Dukes of Dixieland
Traditional New Orleans Jazz Since 1994, the Dukes of Dixieland have been blowing traditional jazz and Dixieland into the 21st Century, weaving strands of gospel, pop and country with authentic New Orleans Sounds on board the Steamer NATCHEZ.
Jazz is an American tradition celebrated by the Dukes of Dixieland during every performance. Recently nominated for a Grammy award, The Dukes have maintained its preeminent position for four decades and is the oldest continually performing jazz ensemble in New Orleans.
Tradition stands behind today's Dukes as they step forward with sound that is durable and flexible, as jazz is meant to be. The Dukes of Dixieland - strong tradition, new ground, great sounds. www.dukesofdixieland.com
The Pfister Sisters
Harmonious Vocals The Pfister sisters are simply exquisite. These sophisticated ladies have beautifully captured the sounds of an era gone by and made the music fresh and alive again.
"The Pfisters' specialty, the recreation of the harmonies of New Orleans' own Boswell Sisters, occupies an important place in the history and evolution of New Orleans music. The Boswell sisters, in the twenties and thirties, invented close harmony jazz singing.
The Pfister Sisters carry on this tradition. Their music, however, is anything but a museum piece. Their voices melt together, their band really kicks, and they get the audience smiling and swaying in the timelessness that is the joy of music." - New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival Review www.pfistersisters.com
Luther Kent - Blues Singer
A member of the Louisiana Hall of Fame and the Louisiana Blues Hall of Fame, Luther Kent is a native New Orleanian born with a grit and growl that made him a natural down-and-dirty blues singer. From the age of 14, he was that and much more.
A world-class singer, whose voice goes to the depth of turning blues and jazz into poetry. For nearly 40 years, Kent's "trick bag" of musical styles has set clubs, theaters and festivals on fire with low-down blues, sizzling rhythm and blues dance tunes and romantic favorites.
Today Luther's distinctive voice is the sound of the New Orleans Convention & Visitors Bureau and is featured on Harrah's New Orleans Casino and the Louisiana Lottery's commercials.
Anyone who has ever been to New Orleans and heard Luther Kent, knows that you have not lived until you hear Luther Kent "sing the blues".
THE CUISINE
Experience New Orleans Creole Cuisine as Great Chefs of New Orleans Television Series chefs prepare regional cuisine for you to enjoy.
Chef Bonnot was born in France and worked under Parisian chefs for seven years. After several years cooking in London at the Savoy Hotel, he moved to Guadeloupe, where he learned to integrate Creole cooking with French cuisine, and was "chef saucier" at La Caravelle. In 1969 he moved to New Orleans becoming Chef du Cuisine at the famous restaurant Louis XVI, and where he was proprietor/chef at Chez Daniel, Le Restaurant de la Tour Eiffel, and most recently, Bizou.
His menus are an imaginative combination of local dishes and classic French dishes. The acclaimed New Orleans chef Susan Spicer claims Bonnot as her mentor. Chef Bonnot has received numerous awards and accolades for his culinary mastery, including being named Chef of the Year in New Orleans in 1980 and 1995. Esquire Magazine named his Restaurant Bizou one of the 10 Best New Restaurants in the country. Chef Bonnot is highly sought after for personal appearances and he has previously taught cooking courses for events in the U.S. and on the French Riviera, for the Brazilian government and aboard several cruise lines. He prepared the Presidential Dinner in Bolivia for opening of the fist summit of the South American Presidents. A featured Chef on the Great Chefs TV Series, he also starred in 5 shows for the TV Food Network's show "Chef du Jour.
Chef Willy Coln is synonymous with exceptional New Orleans Cuisine. The German born chef began his career at the tender age of 14, apprenticing in French cuisine. He spent the next six years working with some of Europe's finest chefs before coming to New Orleans in 1965.
Chef Coln opened the highly acclaimed Chalet on the west back and established the city's first apprenticeship program. Coln's style and culinary finesse, which involves incorporating fresh local products with traditional European touches, can be samples at the award winning Veranda Restaurant at the Hotel Intercontinental New Orleans. His culinary interpretations, a reflection of his classic European training, have won him many accolades, including Chef of the Year.
THE RIVERBOAT RACES
Steamboat races are as old as steamboats themselves, dating back to the early 1800's. The NATCHEZ is the ninth steamer to bear this name and to date has never been beaten; she is the best of her times.
During our river relief tour we will challenge riverboats along the way for a race for the "antlers" a traditional trophy among riverboats for over 100 years.
