We simply need to get used to hearing the two concepts stated in the same sentence: historic architecture and green architecture. In our hearts, we know they are one and the same. Anything historic is naturally green . . . green, at least, in today’s terms of environmentally-friendly, sustainable, and with minimal carbon footprint.

On May 3, 2010, Indiana Landmarks kicks off National Preservation Month in New Albany, at Cornerstone Evangelical Methodist Church, 418 East Spring Street, 7:00 – 8:30 PM. Join the conversation with our speakers. Gary Kleier, Historic Architect, Gary Kleier Associates, and Steve Thompson, Green Contractor, Full Spectrum Contracting, present “Historic Architecture is Green Architecture.” Kleier and Thompson will demonstrate, through their latest green renovation project that our ancestors knew about saving and using and reusing. Kleier explains “In postwar America, anything “new” seemed better. Today, we need reminding that “new” is not necessarily better, and that saving and reusing never really went out of style.”

Those questioning whether or not the green movement threatens historic preservation can learn from our speakers how they are one and the same, and that the investment in saving our historic structures benefits individuals and communities.
