Join Mayor Jerry Abramson on Saturday, October 29, 2005, for the first Mayor’s Hike at Jefferson Memorial Forest. This free event, which is part of the Mayor’s Healthy Hometown Movement, is intended to showcase the breathtaking beauty of the nation’s largest
municipal urban forest during peak fall foliage colors.
The Mayor’s Hike takes place in Jefferson Memorial Forest’s Horine Section, at 12304 Holsclaw Hill Road. Hikers will have a chance to explore five of the Forest’s 13 trails, ranging in length from one-fifth of a mile up to 4? miles, with terrain varying from relatively flat to rugged. A wheelchair accessible trail is available.
The event will also feature a health-fair atmosphere with nutritional snacks, music and several informational booths (opening at 9 a.m.) providing tips on hiking safety, trail etiquette and other healthy-living information. Free children’s activities such as pumpkin painting, face painting and hayrides will be provided throughout the day, and families are also encouraged to reserve a campsite for the evening. Beginning at 8 p.m., Metro Parks staff will entertain visitors with stories, songs and s’mores around a roaring campfire.
