The HCM Adult Day Center has been serving families struggling with the demands of dementia care for their loved ones for almost 40 years.  Located on the first floor of St. Paul’s United Methodist on Bardstown Road at 2000 Douglass Boulevard (502-459-4887), the Center was started in 1975 by the Highlands Community Ministries (HCM) and is headed by Denise Steilberg, a nurse manager with more than 25 years in geriatric psychiatry.

“We’re very fortunate to have Denise,” says Mary Kay Flege, Senior Services Committee Chair for HCM.  “Her skills are unique for adult day centers in this area and unfortunately, the need for dementia care is only growing.  In addition, most of our staff has been with the program for 10 years or more, even our two resident dogs—Pixie and Angus—have been here for quite a while.”

Although the Center specializes in dementia and respite care, it can accommodate a variety of physical and mental challenges.  “The HCM Adult Day Center is a convenient choice for family members who work downtown and are looking for a safe and relaxing environment for their loved one” says Flege, “and it’s a great fit with our mission to embrace and support the community.”

A typical day at HCM includes table games, bowling, socialization and time for petting the resident dogs as shown in the photo gallery attached.
