The way Helen Walls sees it, had it not been for Newport police officer Tom Collins's presence at Newport Middle School, her daughter would not have received the help she needed when she needed it.
"She was attacked on her way home from school, in January," Walls said of her daughter, a Newport Middle School student. Walls said her first attempt to involve Newport police was discouraging.
"The first officer refused to do a report," Walls noted with a touch of frustration. "In his estimation, we waited too long to try to file a report of the attack. He told us, 'I don't do half-reports.'"
Insisting that she'd contacted the NPD just 10 minutes after the attack, and that she'd never experienced previous trouble with Newport police, Walls's next move was to notify the school. After all, this was not the first bit of trouble her daughter had with the alleged attacker.
"I think this would still be a problem, if not for Officer Collins," Walls said of Newport's sole School Resource Officer. "He filled out the report, which enabled me to file charges."
