“THE ANGRY INCH” COMES TO ART SANCTUARY AND ALLEY THEATER
The River City becomes a Wicked Little Town this month when Art Sanctuary and The Alley Theater present "Hedwig and The Angry Inch!" beginning on April 23 at 8 PM and running through May 22nd. The cult classic, gender-bending glam rock musical will be performed at 1205 E. Washington St. promises to tear Art Sanctuary and the Alley Theater down!
The musical features Hedwig, recipient of a horribly botched sex change operation which has left her with "an angry inch." This "internationally-ignored song stylist." recounts the tale of how she came to be "barely standing before you." Hedwig appears hot on the heels of rock superstar Tommy Gnosis's "Tour of Atonement". She wants the world to know Tommy, her former lover, achieved stardom by stealing all her songs -- and another little piece of her heart. After a rock-operatic life of loss, abandonment, and the search for her "other half", Hedwig will be heard.
This homegrown production of "Hedwig" features an array of Louisville's top musical and theatrical talent. Scott Anthony (Hedwig/Tommy Gnosis) recently starred in The Alley Theater's sold-out run of Evil Dead The Musical and appeared as a member of Hedwig's band, The Angry Inch, in Actor Theatre's 2007 production. Current Angry Inch members have appeared in a bevy of local music groups including lovesauce & soulbones, the rain chorus, Waterproof Blonde, a.m. Sunday, Arnett Hollow, Rifle, and Frisbee, as well as internationally-renowned rock group Days of the New.
Director Mike Brooks is the co-founder and emcee of The Late Seating at Actors Theatre. His recent directing work includes multiple productions at Actors Theatre and the sold-out run of Louisville Repertory Company's "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." He is a featured playwright in Finnigan Production's upcoming Festival of Funky Fresh Fun and serves as Grants Manager for the Kentucky Arts Council.
The musical, written by John Cameron Mitchell with music by Stephen Trask, premiered in 1998, winning a Village Voice Obie Award and Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical. Mitchell adapted, directed and starred in the 2001 feature film. The film won the 2001 Sundance Film Festival's Dramatic Audience Award and Dramatic Directing Award.
